Yankees Get Big Win Over Blue Jays

Go Yankees!

New York’s hometown team enjoyed an exciting win on Tuesday night as Miguel Andujar hit his first career grand slam and CC Sabathia had a solid outing on the mound.

Sabathia successfully avoided a six-start winless streak with Tuesday’s win as the Yankees topped the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2. This marked the team’s sixth victory in seven games as they have improved to 30-9 since their 9-9 start to the season.

Andujar sent a pitch from right-hander Seunghwan Oh (1-2) into the stands in the seventh inning. This was his first grand slam in the big league and his seventh homer of the season. He leads all MLB rookies with 29 extra-base hits so far this year. He wasn’t the only one to send one over the fence, with Aaron Hicks connecting for a three-run blast off Aaron Loup in the eighth. This was his sixth homer on the season.

Sabathia (3-1) allowed a pair of runs and three hits to secure his first win since April 29 against the Los Angeles Angels. His seven innings of work matched his season high. Since the beginning of the 2017 season, Sabathia is 10-0 with a low 2.71 ERA in 16 starts following a Yankees defeat.

The Yankees are the best in the league at 27-3 when their starting pitchers throw at least six innings. Their win over the Blue Jays gave Toronto their ninth loss in 10 home games. Right-hander Marco Estrada had kept the Yankees under control, giving up one run and six hits in six innings. Things began to look up for the Yankees in the seventh once Gary Sanchez singled to start it off. A hit-by-pitch batter and walked batter set the scene for Andujar’s first-pitch grand slam that sailed into the second deck in left field.

One noticeable absence from the Yankees lineup was outfielder Aaron Judge. He got the day off after struggling in a doubleheader against Detroit, going 0 for 9 with eight strikeouts. Left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery, who has been out since May 1, will undergo Tommy John surgery this week to end his season.
