Commuters may soon notice welcome improvements to major bus stops across the city.
The Tucson Department of Transportation has begun a remodeling project that will update 55 bus shelters in areas with high ridership and great need.
Crews are in the very early stages of the project, which some community members have been pushing for a long time.
With over 2,000 bus stops throughout the city, many are in need of repairs and updates.
Tucson Department of Transportation is implementing 50 solar powered lights at these selected stops, as well as expanded shade to shelter riders from the sun.
The new lighting fixtures will make it safer for riders to keep an eye on their surroundings while waiting for a bus. For bus drivers, it will be easier to see if a person is waiting to get picked up at a stop.
Customers are encouraged to call Sun Tran at 520-792-2222 if they see a stop in need of attention or updates.
