Uber users in the Phoenix area can now add tips to their rides directly through the app.
The troubled yet popular ride-hailing app recently launched it’s latest feature, something drivers have been requesting for a long time. One of the benefits of competitor Lyft Inc. is their in-app tipping option.
The new tipping option is part of the San-Francisco-based company’s commitment to “180 Days of Change” for drivers. Many drivers have favored Lyft because of their better benefits and incentives for drivers, and this move hopes to change that. According to an Uber statement, this campaign aims to “meaningfully fix and improve the driving experience.”
The addition of tipping will keep drivers’ happy, a positive change after months of upheaval and controversy, including the recent resignation of founder and CEO Travis Kalanick. After an internal investigation, Former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder gave nearly 50 recommendations to the company on what to improve, following allegations of sexual harassment and negative workplace culture.
Phoenix is among other large cities throughout the country where the new feature has been implemented, and every market should have the option by the end of the month.
Tipping is optional, but riders are encouraged to do so for drivers who provide excellent service. Riders can tip up to two times the total fare, with a maximum of $100, through the app. There is no minimum tip, and drivers can accept cash tips as well. One concern for customers was whether the new feature would impact their rider rating, but they can rest assured that tipping will not impact ratings. Drivers need to rate their rider before they see the fare receipt.
Customers will have up to seven days after their ride to select their rating and add a tip. They can also go back and tip a driver up to 30 days after a trip, even if they have already submitted their rating.
The tipping option is also available for UberEats, the food delivery service.
