A Florida man who was in New York City for a relative’s wedding died after being punched in the face by a after he was punched in the face by a college basketball coach while hailing a cab.

35-year-old Sandor Szabo had enjoyed a night out after traveling to NYC from Boca Raton, FL, to attend his stepsister’s wedding in Queens.

Police say that in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 5, Szabo departed his brother’s hotel and requested an Uber back to his hotel. While waiting for his Uber, Szabo mistook a white SUV for his ride home and knocked on the window.

The driver, who has since been identified as Wake Forest University assistant basketball coach Jamil Jones, exited the vehicle and punched Szabo in the face. The victim was knocked unconscious after falling and striking his head on the ground, according to NYPD officials.

After several days, 35-year-old Jones turned himself in to police custody, where he was initially charged with third-degree assault. Those charges are likely to be upgraded. He fled the scene after the deadly punch, while witnesses rushed to Szabo’s aid. Unfortunately, it was too late, as he passed away from his injuries.

Szabo’s employer, What If Media Group, took to Facebook to share their condolences: “We will remember his bright smile, his positive attitude, his passion for our company (and each of us), his love of fish, fishing, and cooking, and his love of family. His beautiful spirit and his love of life will remain with us. We are going to miss him dearly.”
