It’s no secret that the Valley is a culinary melting pot, uniting old and new to form an identity all its own. The community’s creative spirit, reflected in its many fusion restaurants and reclaimed art galleries, is also captured in its donuts, which have elevated the baked good from a humdrum breakfast pastry to an extraordinary form of edible art. These four donut shops offer unexpected flavors you won’t find at the local Krispy Kreme.

Rollover Donuts— Phoenix

Rollover Donuts is the perfect stop for those looking to satisfy their sweet tooth with gourmet brioche donuts. Serving classic flavors like chocolate or vanilla glaze, and specialty donuts featuring a broad scope of unusual flavors from pistachio to spicy Thai coconut, this Roosevelt Street favorite has something for everyone.

Even the shop’s most elaborate donuts are less than $3 each and a baker’s dozen is just under $22.

Rollover is celebrating National Donut Day by making a positive impact on the community. The shop partnered with the Salvation Army to host a bottled water donation drive. Donations can be made to Rollover’s parent restaurant, Short Leash Hot Dogs at both its Downtown Phoenix and Biltmore Fashion Park locations.

The Local Donut— Scottsdale

Scottsdale’s cutest little donut shop is celebrating National Donut Day by giving its customers a free donut card for future use. You can indulge in one of the Local Donut’s beautiful gourmet donuts today, and come back for your free treat anytime before Sept. 3.

This shop’s fun flavors span from traditional sprinkles to the one-of-a-kind fruity pebbles donut, and each will set you back less than $2.

Donutsville— Peoria

Peoria’s Donutsville Cafe and Bakery, aims to help its customers start their day off with a smile.

Originally from Orange County, California, Donutsville grew from a collaboration of bakers and donut shop owners with locations throughout Southern California. It is also the sister shop of Scottsdale’s Local Donut.

For just under $1.60 for each donut, and $8.90 by the dozen, these sugary creations offer gourmet donut flavor at grocery store prices.

If you make a purchase on National Donut Day, save your receipt and Donutsville will give you a complimentary traditional donut the following week.

Rainbow Donuts— Chandler

With donut varieties representing every color of the rainbow and every flavor imaginable, Chandler’s Rainbow Donuts and Smoothies serves up can’t miss sweets that will send you into a sugar coma– in a good way. 

Although the shop doesn’t seem to be offering any National Donut Day specials, Rainbow is worth the drive because it specializes in the donut’s younger, trendier cousin, the croissant donut, or cronut. These overloaded goodies cost about $2 each.

Menu highlights include red velvet, maple bacon and green tea croissant donuts.
