Tempe’s College Connect Offers Three Free Summer Workshops

Students and parents can get a head start on the college preparation process by attending three workshops this summer as part of the College Connect program. Workshop attendees will receive hands-on guidance from experienced staff members on several topics including career exploration, scholarships, searching for a college and filling out the application. One-on-one sessions will also be available immediately following each workshop. The workshops are free; registration is required.

Workshop schedule

 Friday, June 9th 12:00-1 p.m.

  Major/Career Exploration

  • Light Lunch will be provided
  • Activities: Icebreaker game; career assessment; mapping majors; volunteer opportunities available in the library; Q&A

June 30th – 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Scholarships

  • Light Lunch will be provided
  • Activities: Icebreaker game; overview on types of scholarships; create FSA IDs; students will write the outline for all of their basic scholarship essays

July 14th 2-3:30 p.m.

College Searches and Applications

  • Snacks will be provided
  • Activities: Icebreaker game; College Jeopardy highlighting community, state, private and for-profit colleges; students will create a MEID (Community College ID)

All workshops take place at the Tempe Public Library, located at 3500 S. Rural Rd., downstairs in the Teen Center Conference Room.

Registration: Students and parents can register for the workshops by visiting www.CollegeConnectTempe.org. There is a 15 person maximum for each session, which will be filled on a first-come-first served basis.

About College Connect

College Connect is a partnership with the City of Tempe and several Valley colleges to connect students and parents to resources. Students can take part in year-round workshops, one-on-one meetings and small group sessions with college representatives from across the state. Partners include: Tempe Union High School District, Tempe Elementary School District, ASU, Grand Canyon University, Mesa Community College, Northern Arizona University, Rio Salado College, South Mountain Community College, University of Advancing Technology and University of Arizona. The community-based program has been specifically designed to assist young people in fulfilling their dreams of a post-secondary education.
