Tempe Police & DEA Partner October 22 for Community Safe Disposal of Drugs

Tempe Police are partnering again with the Arizona Drug Enforcement Administration and law enforcement agencies at sites across the state for an upcoming drug “take back” event.

What:  Anonymous Disposal of Community Member Unused and Expired Medications

When:  Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Where:  Tempe Police South Substation

Address:  8201 S. Hardy Drive, Tempe AZ  85284

Directions: S/E Corner of Hardy and Carver, between Elliot and Warner

How It Works:  Bring your unused/expired prescription and over-the-counter medications in original containers.  Disposal is anonymous.  Medications will be placed into boxes provided by DEA and Tempe Police.  Law Enforcement personnel will seal and deliver the disposed medications for proper destruction.

Ø  We are set up to safely receive prescription and over-the-counter medications

Ø  We are unable to safely accept glass, syringes, injectables, or sharps of any kind

Ø  No need to remove labels w/ personal info – disposables will be incinerated by law enforcement

Tempe Police and the DEA continue to take action on many fronts to stop prescription drug abuse, addiction, theft and re-sale trafficking.  Many abused prescription drugs are obtained from the home medicine cabinet.  In addition, flushing medications is a health hazard that adversely impacts our water supply and the environment.  Our goal is to impact accidental poisonings, overdoses and deaths due to the inappropriate use of prescription drugs.

For those unable to dispose of medications on October 22, two secure prescription/over the counter medication disposal kiosks are available for community members year-round.  The kiosks are sponsored by the Tempe Police in partnership with the Tempe Coalition and Attorney General’s Office. Mondays-Fridays from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. excepting City Holidays: Tempe Police Headquarters lobby: 120 E. 5th St; and Tempe Police Apache Substation lobby: 1855 E. Apache Blvd
