Their 2016-2017 season came to a stunning close this week as Sun Devil Women’s Golf earned the National Championship title.
The athletes of the women’s golf program, Monica Vaughn, Roberta Liti, Sophia Zeeb, Linnea Strom, Olivia Mehaffey, Madison Kerley, and Taylor Coleman, sealed the deal with an impressive performance Wednesday at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
With weather conditions delaying the semifinal round into Wednesday morning, the women had the chance to start the day off right with comeback victories in extra holes. They defeated top-seeded Northwestern to take home the Sun Devils’ NCAA-best eighth national title.
It was a sweet finish for the program, which made it’s thirty-third NCAA Championship appearance. Earlier in the week, Monica Vaughn captured the NCAA individual title, becoming the third Sun Devil to win that and a team NCAA title in the same season. She joins Emilee Klein (1994) and Kristel Mourge d’Algue (1995) as the only women to do so.
