Expands Fly Ash Supply in Utah, California and Colorado with Bonanza Power Plant

Deseret Power has awarded Salt River Materials Group (SRMG) the Fly Ash Marketing Agreement for its Bonanza Power Plant (Bonanza). This important, long‐term agreement provides SRMG with exclusive rights to market the ASTM C‐618 Class “F” Fly Ash produced at Bonanza.
The SRMG contract becomes effective in March of 2017, and represents the sixth (6th) ash agreement in SRMG’s portfolio: Cholla, Four Corners, Escalante, San Juan, Coronado and now, Bonanza.
Marketing Bonanza Class “F” Fly Ash will add to SRMG’s 44‐year legacy of recycling fly ash from power plants. Over that timespan SRMG’s efforts have resulted in the successful recycling of 15 million tons of fly ash. Using fly ash for beneficial purposes in concrete and concrete products saves valuable landfill space which also eliminates potential environmental impacts.
Bonanza is located in northeastern Utah, south of the city of Vernal, and is approximately 200 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. Deseret Power Electric Cooperative is a vertically integrated, non‐profit corporation, headquartered in Salt Lake City, and owned by its six rural members. Deseret Power supplies Bonanza with fuel from its own coal mine so the quality of the resultant fly ash is quite consistent.
At a time when coal‐burning power plants are shutting down and creating a reduction in fly ash supplies, SRMG is excited to have added a stable, quality source of Class “F” Fly Ash that will allow SRMG to continue to be a reliable, major supplier of fly ash in the Southwestern U.S. for years to come.
