Airport Business magazine recognizes 40 outstanding individuals under 40 years of age from
the aviation industry each year, and in 2016 one of those young professionals can be found at Phoenix Sky
Harbor International Airport.
Tyler Maheu, Ground Transportation Superintendent, is one of the 40 people nationwide named to the 2016
list recognizing younger industry professionals. Maheu, 29, was nominated by Assistant Aviation Director
Chad Makovsky.
“Tyler has accomplished much in the aviation field in such a short time,” Makovsky said. “With his drive
and initiative apparent so early in his career, I expect him to leave an indelible mark on this industry.”
The Airport Business listing recognizes individuals who work in the airport and fixed-base operator (FBO)
industry and have made an impact in the aviation field. Rising stars who are 39 years old or younger on Nov.
1, 2016, were eligible to be nominated to the magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 listing.
Maheu started working for the City of Phoenix Aviation Department in 2014 as an intern performing
research and developing special projects in several departmental divisions. The Aviation Department’s
internship program provides real-world experience in operating and maintaining one of the busiest airports in
the world while offering extensive training and valuable aviation industry experience. He was hired as a staff member in March 2015 and was promoted to Ground Transportation Superintendent May 2016. As superintendent, he oversees all commercial ground transportation activities, including permitting, contracting and operations of more than 650 permitted operators. He also managed the modernization of the Airport’s ground transportation policy, which created a more equitable fee system and provided an approved structure to support shared-ride services like Uber and Lyft.
Maheu has worked in the aviation industry since 2009 when he interned for Alaska Airlines in Seattle
managing its flight management system database. Following graduation in 2010 from Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz., he held work positions with duties calling on him to ensure flight
safety for U.S. Customs and Border Protection unmanned aircraft, recruit technical aviation and IT
employees, and supervise up to 125 civilian role-players during National Guard training exercises.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree, Maheu also holds a master’s degree from Embry-Riddle’s Worldwide
Campus. He is a Certified Member of the American Association of Airport Executives, a Legislative
Subcommittee member of the Arizona Airports Association (AzAA), and a member of the Southwest
Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (SWAAAE).
