Some first responders are taking a stand to help vulnerable mothers and babies.

Rural Metro Fire stations throughout Pima County are enforcing their role as Safe Baby Havens, reminding residents of this by putting in new signs and decals.

The signage has been provided by the Arizona Safe Baby Haven Foundation, which aims to raise awareness about the state’s Safe Haven Law that’s designed to save precious lives. The organization has also provided valuable information to update and ultimately improve firefighter training.

Now, decals will appear on ambulances, too- an important move considering all on-duty uniformed EMT are essential to the Safe haven system. A parent  who feels unable to care for their baby can turn their infant in to an uniformed EMT, anywhere and anytime, no questions asked. The parent can remain anonymous and will not face criminal charges, thanks to a state law that protects those who leave an unharmed newborn with a Safe Haven Provider. These providers include designated churches, fire stations, hospitals and on-duty emergency medical technicians.

It is very important that the baby is not left unattended, and must be physically handed over to the provider.
