Red Light Crash Turns Deadly in Phoenix

A red-light runner lost her life on Sunday morning in the valley.

According to Phoenix Police, 42-year-old Irene Conger ran a red light and slammed into a vehicle and a pole around 2:30 a.m. This was at the intersection of 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Conger was heading southbound in a 2007 Chevy Tahoe when she blew through the red light and hit a four-door Honda heading east on Bethany Home. The 61-year-old man in that vehicle was taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons.

Conger’s car ended up hitting a light rail poll and rolling over onto the light rail tracks. She was transported to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Valley Metro employees had to inspect the area to make sure there was no damage to the tracks or light rail structure. Although the light rail was disrupted for a little bit, Valley Metro had buses in place to take passengers from Montebello to Glendale.
