A Pittsburgh defense attorney pleaded guilty to covering up the overdose death of a friend and abandoning the body in an alleyway in Squirrel Hill.

38-year-old Kevin Abramovitz pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence, obstruction of the law and hindering apprehension. A judge delayed sentencing him until after he completes a 90-day in-patient rehabilitation program.

Abramovitz was arrested on the fifth floor of the Allegheny County Courthouse following a grand jury’s indictment on 13 charges, including drug violations and witness intimidation.

The charges are related to the death of an unidentified man in June 2017 whose body was discovered in a purple comforter in the alley of Annette Way. Two anonymous callers had alerted authorities of the body in the area of the intersection of Annette and Fair Oaks Street.

Investigators said the body was not visible from the intersection, and a person would require “intimate knowledge” of the victim’s location to place a report.

A criminal complaint states that the unnamed victim was staying in Abramovitz’ apartment. A witness who was with the victim allegedly called Abramovitz and his girlfriend on the evening of June 23 to tell them the victim had died of an opioid overdose.

Danielle Smith, the girlfriend, is a co-defendant in the case. The witness said CPR was not successful, and they repeatedly asked Abramovitz or Smith to call 911, but Abramovitz said he didn’t want authorities to come to the apartment because they would all get in trouble.
