The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has released new details in a deputy-involved shooting over the weekend.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of the Casino Del Sol located on West Valencia Road. At approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, deputies pursued a vehicle into the parking lot, at which point a squad car from the Pascua Yaqui Police Department was struck by the suspect’s car.
An armed male suspect then fled the scene and ran into the nearby desert area, and deputies pursued the man and fired at him. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as 39-year-old James Vincent Ewer II. The two deputies involved in the incident have been confirmed as 22-year-veteran Deputy Paul Petropoulos and 17-year-veteran Sergeant Aaron Cross. Neither was injured, although a department canine suffered minor injuries and was treated before being released to his handler’s care.
An Officer from the Pascua Yaqui Police Department did receive minor injuries from the initial collision in the parking lot, but was not taken to the hospital. The investigation remains ongoing.
