A local shelter will be implementing changes to encourage adoption.

Pima Animal Care Center, one of the most popular shelters in the county, will be removing dog breeds from the identification cards on each kennel, replacing them with additional information on the dog’s personality.

By doing so, the center hopes to focus more on the dog’s individual characteristics and personality, rather than stereotypes for certain breeds.

This new method will give potential adopters the chance to learn more about their new furry friends and find a dog that fits their family. The descriptions will allow them to know what the dog’s behaviors and characteristics are prior to finalizing the adoption.

It can be difficult for shelters to determine exactly what breed a dog is unless they perform DNA testing, so mislabels and misconceptions can be common.

With this latest move, Pima Animal Care Center joins a number of shelters across the country who have considered or implemented this change, including the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, which made the switch last year.

By doing so, people may take a second look at a dog that they would otherwise misjudge and disregard based on the breed.
