More than 300 intermediate and high risk sex offenders reside in a 4.6-square-mile stretch of west and south Phoenix. That area, which encompasses the 85007 zip code, has nearly three times more registered sex offenders than both of the neighboring zip codes.
The Phoenix zip code 85007 is located between 19th Avenue and 7th Avenue and Thomas Avenue to the Salt River, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (ADPS) records.
This Phoenix area is home to 310 individuals currently registered as sex offenders, according to ADPS. These individuals identify as level two risk (intermediate) or as level three risk (high) offenders.
Although others exist, the most common sex offender profiles are child sexual abusers, rapists, female sex offenders and internet offenders, stated from the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending and Tracking (SMART).
ADPS says Arizona has 14,488 total registered sex offenders.
Legislation enacted in 2008 created restrictions for level three risk offenders that prohibit the individuals from residing within 1,000 feet of a public or private school or a child care facility within Arizona, reported in an Arizona State Senate research brief.
“The Arizona Department of Public Safety maintains a sex offender information page on our website which you may access for information,” Quentin G. Mehr of the Public Information officer said.
A sex offender has ten days to register before facing additional punishment and penalties. The failure to register as a sex offender is a class 4 felony, according to the ADPS.
“Each county sheriff’s department has their own responsibility, primarily for monitoring where sex offenders reside when released from incarnation,” Arizona Department of Public Safety Public Affairs Media Specialist Bart Graves said. “Courts work with the county sheriff’s department after a sex offender has served their time. It is up to the county sheriff’s office to record the information and work with police to track it.”
As level three is the highest, the media and other important stakeholders are notified of the offender’s address and a photo is posted in the neighborhood.
Level one sex offenders are low risk and must register for 15 years. Level two sex offenders must register for 25 years and level three offenders must register for life, reported from JacksonWhite criminal defense team.
