Two Northland Preparatory Academy students are celebrating an amazing achievement-an invitation to National History Day!
For their first time participating in the contest, seventh graders Ella Downard and Joy Kim created a documentary on Malala Yousafzai that won their school and state History Day competitions. Yousafzai is the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize winner and a Pakistani native who has advocated for female education and equal rights despite hostile treatment and an attack on her life.
Having succeeded in the first two rounds, the two have a new challenge ahead of them-trying to raise enough funds to make it to Nationals in College Park, Maryland, with their teacher Elysia Pohl. The girls need to raise nearly $4,000 to attend, and they have established a GoFundMe page in an effort to make it happen. As of Tuesday night, they had raised $855 toward their goal.
