No Más Bebés Documentary Screening and Discussion Planned for Friday

The public is invited to a screening and discussion of the documentary No Más Bebés this upcoming Friday, November 11.

The event, organized by ASU, will take place conveniently in downtown Phoenix at ASU’s A.E. England Building (424 N. Central Ave).

The documentary film tells the heartbreaking yet inspiring story of Mexican immigrant mothers who grouped together and sued county doctors, the state and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center during the late 1960s and early 1970s. This poignant tale shows how the mothers, along with a proactive Chicana laywer and a whistle-blowing young doctor, stood up to powerful institutions to secure justice.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with the filmmaker. 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of Madrigal v. Quilligan, the landmark civil rights lawsuit that asserted that a woman’s right to bear a child is guaranteed under the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade.

Join ASU and the Phoenix community at this event and take a closer look at this compelling story of love, loss and strength. The showing begins at 7 pm and will go until 10 pm. For more information on the event, please visit the ASU event page.
