Abes of Maine was launched as a summer shop out of Old Orchard Beach, near Portland, Maine by three brothers in 1979.

Photography was one of the most rapidly developing and expanding product lines at that time. So, cameras were becoming more available and user friendly. The store of Abes of Maine became THE place where a wide variety of popular cameras and electronics could be found. The store earned a reputation for knowledge. Abes of Maine’s enthusiasm for photography can be still noticed today.

The store of Abes of Maine became a more permanent fixture in 1981 and opened year round. The store carried cameras and electronics primarily. In 1982, they started advertizing in some well-known national magazines including Popular Photography, Modern Photography, Shutterbug, and the list goes on.

Due to the huge demand of photography equipment, Abes of Maine was expanding and relocated to a more appropriate location – Brooklyn, New York.

The words “of Maine” were added to the original name of the store”Abes” in magazine ads, to indicate where the store was located. After few years, they built a reputation under the name “Abes of Maine”. So, after the relocation, they decided not to get rid of the words “of Maine”.

Abes of Maine’s new showroom in Brooklyn was bigger and more accessible. This encouraged even more people to visit the store and enjoy its awesome products, loyal and outstanding customer service and fair pricing. The new location was also more suitable for the customers and also for the manufacturers to bring new products.

With the internet revolution, Abes of Maine evolved with the times. They launched their first website, which grew up into the professional site you see today. They have worked on this website with their customer’s help, throughout the years. Customer’s feedback helps them to upgrade their website’s look and efficiency.

Although they have several showrooms displaying their extensive product catalog to visitors in person, web and phone orders account for most of Abes of Maine business today.

At the present moment, Abes of Maine have expanded their line. They have added all sorts of electronics. Moreover, they have added more audio equipment to their inventory; they have also expanded their ever growing line of appliances, with a wide range of Appliances from knife sets to refrigerators.
