A Long Island house fire killed a woman and injured her adult daughter on Friday morning.

Emergency responders were called to a home on Ohls Street near North Clinton Avenue just before 10 a.m.

According to Suffolk County Police, 65-year-old Elisa Doughty was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 34-year-old daughter, Kristle Doughty, suffered burns to more than 20% of her body. Firefighters found her on the ground floor and she was rushed to a local hospital.

North Patchogue fire chief Thomas Wassmer said it was possible she was burned while trying to make it down the stairs.¬† Although Suffolk Police say the fire does not seem criminal in nature, it’s likely to have started in the basement where the victim lived.

Police say the basement apartment with a small kitchen was illegal. Authorities are also investigating complaints by neighbors of alleged drug dealing at the house.
