Friday’s evening commute turned terrifying for travelers and cityfolk in Midtown Manhattan as several pedestrians were struck by a van near Penn Station.
The incident occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. when a large commercial van struck three pedestrians in the crosswalk near 31st Street and Seventh Avenue. It caused quite the commotion during rush hour traffic, with shocked onlookers scrambling for safety as the crash instantly brought back horrid memories of recent terrorist attacks in London and Barcelona, Spain.
NYPD said two women and a man were hit by the van and transported to Bellevue Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said the driver remained on the scene of what appears to be an accident. The 68-year-old driver told police he accidentally accelerated when the van’s floor mat got caught on the gas pedal.
