It’s no secret the teacher shortage in Arizona is growing. In fact, the Arizona Department of Education recently formed a taskforce to find solutions to address the issue. Meantime, the Queen Creek Unified School District is taking a different approach to the growing challenge.
A new program called Aim2Teach Queen Creek, in partnership with the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University, just launched at Queen Creek High School. The goal of the program is to increase the pipeline of teachers to QCUSD by growing our own. Currently, more than 150 QCHS students are interested in the program. Many of these future educators want to teach Math, History, English or Science at the high school level. Aim2Teach Queen Creek is part of Career and Technical education curriculum at QCHS. Aim2Teach has also launched programs at schools in Mesa, Gilbert, Deer Valley, Peoria and Dysart school districts.
The first step for students enrolled in the program is taking part in an off campus experience called ‘Becoming a Teacher 101’. Recently 15 QCHS students attended the class at ASU West. During the outing they discussed different topics in education. The students also got to experience the college life during lunch by eating in the college dining area.
