Northcentral University (NCU) and the Arizona Coyotes presented the NCU Hockey Hero of the Year Award to Maria Andreeva of Scottsdale, Ariz. at the March 18 home game against St. Louis. Andreeva, one of three finalists nominated by Coyotes fans for her unconditional support to her hockey community, was awarded a full tuition scholarship to NCU.
“At NCU, where most of our students are busy, working professionals, we understand that life sometimes gets in the way of achieving your personal goals,” said Greg Pollack, NCU Senior Director, Marketing Communications and Strategic Partnerships. “This full tuition NCU bachelor’s-completion, master’s or doctoral scholarship was created to help an individual who has sacrificed their own educational pursuits to give back to others in their hockey community.”
Andreeva, a long-time Coyotes fan, was a 2015 Journalism and Mass Communications graduate of Arizona State University. She played hockey herself until an automobile accident permanently sidelined her. But that didn’t stop her from encouraging others in the hockey community. It was that sense of giving back and reaching out to others that led to her friend, Sara, nominating Andreeva for the scholarship. “Maria is the reason I didn’t give up on myself after so many people told me I couldn’t do it,” Sara said in her nomination letter.
Now working as a network services analyst in the technology industry, Andreeva plans to use the scholarship to complete a Master’s degree in business at NCU.
Andreeva is excited about the opportunity to attend NCU. “I’ve always been into education,” she explains. Her mom was a single parent who worked hard to provide for her, encouraging her daughter to pursue an education. “I want to continue to make her proud. I’m super excited for this opportunity, and I cannot wait to start.”
NCU would also like to congratulate the two other finalists, Eric Frusti of Buckeye and Jessi Fletcher of Tempe.
