Museum of Northern Arizona to Host Navajo Rug Auction

Museum of Northern Arizona to Host Navajo Rug Auction

More than 300 original Navajo rugs will be auctioned on Saturday, June 10.

Auctioneers from The R.B. Burnham & Co. Trading Post will lead the Navajo Rug Auction at the Museum of Northern Arizona, giving the community a chance to learn more about weaving traditions and maybe even take one home!

Many of the weavers will be on hand to meet with guests, and Navajo tacos and frybread will be served. Admission is free and there is no cost to register for a bidder number.

The auction preview will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the official auction kicks off at 2 p.m. The auction will end at 6 p.m.

R.B. Burnham & Co. Trading Post are well known for their dedicated history of trading Navajo art. Experts specializing in the field of Navajo weaving and Native American art will be present, helping to identify hand-carded, vintage and handspun pieces and acrylic yarns to ensure quality prices and items. Ā Attendees will have access to information on how to evaluate and buy Navajo rugs, and before the auction, they will have the chance to feel the rugs and get a closer look at them.

Experts will provide detailed information about specific pieces, the artists who created them and the finished product. Auctions give weavers and other artists the opportunity to obtain an immediate and higher return for their hard work. Selling prices range from $20 to $2000, and even for guests you don’t purchase a rug, it’s an eyeopening experience.

For those who wish to enter their authentic Navajo weavings into the Auction, they will be accepted on June 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Museum of Northern Arizona. Auction specialists will review weavings and help with pricing according to previous auctions.

For more information on the event, please visit the official website or contact the Museum of Northern Arizona at 928-774-5213. The museum is located at 3101 N Fort Valley Rd. Flagstaff, AZ 86001.
