
Megaphone PHX, a collaborative art space in downtown Phoenix, is set to host a poetry slam competition June 22. Previously, the poetry slams were hosted at Lawn Gnome Publishing, a used bookstore downtown, but the location closed in May. However, Lawn Gnome Publishing is still co-hosting the event.
The poetry slam will feature 10 local poets who will bare their souls for the chance to win $50. This month, poets Derek Polivema, Alexis Patton, Shayla Brown, Tristan Marshell, Angelica Salazar, Sadie Lee, Douglas Becker, Cleopache, Brandon Holmes, The Klute and Francisca Gonzales. The slam will also welcome special guest, Miki Devivo, a local storyteller.
The Phoenix poetry scene is still relatively new. According to the event’s Facebook page, Lawn Gnome Publishing hosted the Poetry Slam Inc. event, the 2014 World Individual Poetry Slam. Since then, the slams have attracted listeners and poets alike.
“Early bird” ticket sales closed June 14, but $8 pre-sale tickets are still available until June 21. Tickets at the door will be $12.
