Please describe your business.
Mews & Brews Cat Cafe is a proud member of the Cat Cafe Embassy (http://www.catcafeembassy.com/), whose mission is to get more cats into good homes, provide quality drinks and snacks, and be an educational resource for our communities on cat care. We accomplish this by communicating on best practices and providing cozy atmospheres for our cats and customers.

We will be partnering with Shelley’s Desserts to provide high quality, homemade tasting desserts, including gluten free items. From the cafe, you will be able to order tea, coffee, lattes, and smoothies.

We will be having all sorts of fun events, including mewvie nights, yoga with cats, wine and beer tastings, knitting/crocheting with cats, paint nights, chair massage events, author/play readings, and local artist showcases, student finals week quiet times (with discounts for students who bring student ID!), and we will also host your private events!

Do you have a signature product or service? If so please tell us about it. We will have adoptable cats available for cuddling!

What is a Cat Cafe?

The first cat cafe opened in Taiwan in 1998 and became a very popular tourist attraction. The concept grew, and gained traction in Japan, where living spaces are cramped, and most do not allow pets. Cat cafes became a popular destination for young workers looking for companionship and comfort.

A cat cafe combines a free-roam area for cats with a cafe, where coffee, tea, baked goods, and sometimes food can be served. The cafe and cat area are separated (due to health restrictions), but guests can bring their food into the cat area once it has been purchased from the cafe.

What do you plan on serving once you open?

We plan to serve coffee (cappuccinos, lattes, etc), tea (hot tea, tea lattes), and fruit smoothies. We will also be selling baked goods from local bakery Shelley’s Desserts (including gluten free items!).

What events will you have?

We will be having all sorts of fun events, including mewvie nights, yoga with cats, wine and beer tastings, knitting/crocheting with cats, paint nights, chair massage events, author/play readings, and local artist showcases, student finals week quiet times (with discounts for students who bring student ID!), and we will also host your private events!

Who does a Cat Cafe benefit?

A cat cafe benefits everyone!

Cat Cafes benefit shelter cats – Our cat cafe will partner with Sun Cities 4 Paws Rescue who will provide us with cats that will specifically be able to thrive in a free-roam environment where people can come visit and socialize with the cats. This free-roam environment allows the shelter cats to have more freedom and not be stuck in a cage, who would otherwise only be brought out when their cage is cleaned or when someone might be interested in adopting them. It’s a cozier, homey environment where they can be themselves, and socialize, if they so choose.

Cat Cafes benefit cat shelters – Most no-kill shelters are at full (if not over) capacity at all times, and have to turn away surrenders. This leads to cats being dumped, sometimes on the street (which contributes to the ever-growing feral population), and other times at shelters that may not be no-kill. Our cat cafe will relieve the burden of our partner shelter being over-capacity, and also allow the shelter to accept more surrenders.

Cat Cafes benefit people – When you come in after a long day at work, grab a nice hot drink (whether it be tea or coffee), and sit down with our cats, you are allowing the calming effects of cat purrs and snuggles to soothe your inner soul. It’s also scientifically proven that cat purrs are good for your health!

Cat Cafes benefit local businesses – Our cat cafe will be partnering with Shelley’s Desserts, downtown Glendale’s local bakery. When you purchase a baked good from our cat cafe, you aren’t just supporting us as a local business, you are supporting other local businesses too!

When will you be open?

We are working on many things right now, including funding, finding a location, and dotting our i’s and crossing our t’s. We hope to be open within the next two years, depending on how long licensing and renovations on the location will take, and how soon we can get the necessary funding.

How can I contribute to make your Cat Cafe happen?

We will have a crowdfunding campaign launching on January 24th and we will make sure to post a link on our website and on our Facebook page. Keep checking back!
