More Lit-Up Crosswalks Coming to Phoenix

As pedestrian-involved crashes rise, more and more advocates are pushing for safer crosswalks. Now, it looks like more of those lit, easily identifiable crosswalks will arrive in the heart of Phoenix.

The city of Phoenix is trying to minimize crashes involving pedestrians, and installing these special crosswalks is one way to do so. Officials recently announced they will install ten new H.A.W.K signals in some of the busiest stretches of roads. These signals flash yellow and turn red when there are pedestrians crossing, allowing for a safer journey for all.

The new crosswalks will be at several locations along McDowell road, at the intersections of 34th St., 41st Ave. and 67th ave. H.A.W.K will be added to 15th ave. and Highland and Whitton, as well as five more mid-block locations where pedestrians are often crossing.

By the end of 2018, the city of Phoenix aims to have 51 H.A.W.K signals up and running as they continue their efforts to keep pedestrians and bicyclists safe.
