Homolovi State Park Rangers Plan Special Events

The Flagstaff community is invited to participate in special events at Homolovi State Park this spring. Make the beautiful drive from Flagstaff to Winslow for a beautiful day at the park. Park Rangers have organized these events in an effort to educate visitors about the sacred Hopi land through guided walks, hikes and lectures. The special events include:

• Star Party on Saturday, April 22: Make it a family affair and arrive at least 25 minutes before sunset for an evening of observation of the stunning desert sky. Participants are sure to get spectacular views of everything the sky has to offer, including ghostly nebulae, star clusters, the moon’s cratered landscapes and Venus’ crescent phases. Guests are encouraged to bring a red illumination flashlight, refreshments and bug repellent, and anything else they would like for the picnic facilities and grills that are available at the visitor center.

• Tsu’vo Loop Trail and Petroglyphs on Saturday, April 1: Join park rangers for a 9 a.m.  two-mile-hike along ancient, sandy trails to Dine Point and back. Along the trail, the petroglyphs from Homolovi’s earliest pit-house period will be visible. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and wear sturdy walking shoes and a hat to protect from the sun.

• Petrified Forest Walk on Saturday, April 8 and Saturday, April 22: Join a park ranger for a 9 a.m. walk through the gorgeous landscape to Homolovi’s mini-petrified forest. Explore the park’s paleontological history on this one-mile, one-hour walk to view a one-acre area of exposed petrified trees, a stunning glimpse into history.

• Hopi Pottery Talks on Saturday, April 15: At 10 a.m., Join Gwen Setalla for an interactive discussion and demonstration of traditional Hopi pottery at the park’s visitor center. She will explain how traditional pottery is created and will share tips on recognize authentic pottery. The event will end around 11:30 a.m.

• Petroglyph Tour on Saturday, April 22: Start your morning off right with a 9 a.m. walking tour. Participants will need to bring their own vehicle and be prepared for the weather with plenty of water. The tour will last approximately three hours and consist of 1.5 miles of walking on uneven terrain. Please call for reservations.

For each event, the cost is $7 per vehicle for up to four adults. For more information about Homolovi State Park visit AZStateParks.com/homolovi or call (928) 289-4106.
