The heartbroken family of Shanann Watts has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her murderous husband.

On the same day he was handed three life sentences with no possible parole for murdering his pregnant wife and their two daughters, Chris Watts was listed in the suit filed by Shanann’s parents, Frank and Sandra Rzucek. They are seeking $100,000 in damages after Watts unlawfully terminated his wife’s pregnancy, resulting in the death of their unborn son who was to be named Nico.

Although Colorado state law prevents such filings by any individual besides the spouse of the deceased, Frank Rzucek was able to file this civil lawsuit against 33-year-old Watts because he’s the designated representative of Shanann’s estate. 34-year-old Shanann was reported missing alongside her three-and-four-year-old daughters in August, and Watts was quick to appeal to the media for his family’s safe return. He was arrested on August 15 and charged with murder, eventually pleading guilty to first-degree murder and multiple other charges on November 6. Chris has been sentenced to multiple life terms in prison without any possibility of parole.

The suit alleges Watts purposefully tried to “[misled] investigators” in the days following the murders, making false statements to news reporters and police detectives. “Defendant also gave multiple interviews to television and media outlets where he falsely claimed that he missed his family and was hoping they would all come home, so as to end his supposed ‘nightmare’ of life without his wife and children,” the court filing states.
