Flagstaff has reason to celebrate- the city recently earned another national title: Most Water Wise Community.

As part of the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, Flagstaff residents were encouraged to pledge their commitment to water conservation.

This national recognition is based on the percentage of residents who participated in April and pledged to cut their water use over the next year.

Sponsored by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota Corporation, the nationwide competition garnered the support of more than 15,900 Flagstaff residents, who together pledged to save 82.3 gallons, or around 431 gallons a month. That’s nearly ten percent of what an average residential household uses, a significant change in water usage.

The other co-winners include the cities of Athens (Georgia), Dallas (Texas), Aurora (Colorado), and Laguna Beach, California. In total, people across the country made 421,891 pledges to conserve more water by changing their behaviors and lifestyles, including fixing home leaks, taking shorter showers and reducing runoff into local rivers and streams.
