First Alarm Fire Destroys Two Homes in Mesa
The record-setting temperatures and blazing sunshine did not help firefighters as they battled an intense house fire on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Mesa Fire Department, approximately 100 firefighters rushed to the fire after calls came in around 2:30 pm. The temperatures topped 106 degrees, breaking the 70-year-old record of 105 degrees set back in 1948. Crews had to fight the fast-moving flames in the heat and sun, but they managed to get the fire under control and no one was seriously injured.
The first-alarm fire did destroy two homes near US 60 and Gilbert Road. Firefighters from Mesa Fire and Medical were helped by the Tempe Fire Department and Gilbert Fire Department in keeping the fire from spreading to more homes. No residents were hurt, and although two firefighters experienced heat exhaustion, they did not go to the hospital.
When battling intense flames on scorching hot days, firefighters do work cycles so different crews take over periodically, giving everyone a chance to hydrate and stay safe.
