A Long Island house fire killed a woman and injured her adult daughter on Friday morning.

Emergency responders were called to a home on Ohls Street near North Clinton Avenue just before 10 a.m.

According to Suffolk County Police, 65-year-old Elisa Doughty was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 34-year-old daughter, Kristle Doughty, suffered burns to more than 20% of her body. Firefighters found her on the ground floor and she was rushed to a local hospital.

North Patchogue fire chief Thomas Wassmer said it was possible she was burned while trying to make it down the stairs.  Although Suffolk Police say the fire does not seem criminal in nature, it’s likely to have started in the basement where the victim lived.

Police say the basement apartment with a small kitchen was illegal. Authorities are also investigating complaints by neighbors of alleged drug dealing at the house.
