Curry Elementary Students Receive Free Dental Care at School

About 25 Curry second-graders were in for a special treat one morning, although not your typical sweet and sugary treat. The students received a visit from the Dental Sealant Program, a group part of the Maricopa County Public Health Office, to have their molars sealed at school.

According to their website, the Dental Sealant Program’s goal is to “provide dental screenings, sealants, education, and referrals to second- and sixth-grade students,” especially to those in lower socioeconomic areas. This becomes a huge help to the students and parents, as going to the dentist is often difficult to make time for and can be expensive.

“Some children aren’t able to go to the dentist as often as they should,” mentioned Char Werner, a member of the Dental Sealant Program. “Being able to come to the students at school and maintain the health of their teeth for free is a big help for both the kids and parents.”

With the program, they’re able to bring a free dentist trip to the students. One Curry classroom was converted into a temporary dentist office as students were called in to have their teeth looked at and worked on. Two dental chairs were brought in along with lights and dozens of dentistry tools.

Of course no dentist office would be complete without a waiting area. This was especially important for those nervous about their upcoming turn in the dentist chair as those who had already gone came back to attempt to lessen their fear.

One of those anxiously anticipating their turn was Yaretzy Huitzil.

“I was feeling fine about getting my teeth looked at until I got in here and saw the big light,” said Huitzil, pointing at the light that was shining in one of her classmate’s mouth. “It’s a lot bigger and brighter than I remember. I’ve been to the dentist before, but never at school so I didn’t really know what to expect.”

Fortunately, Huitzil’s visit seemed to go alright. After she was finished, she hopped out of her chair and said confidently, “I guess I didn’t need to be scared. That wasn’t so bad.”

Thank you to everyone over at the Dental Sealant Program for all that you do for children’s dental health and especially those who were able to come to Curry to help our kids. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
