Local residents can protect themselves against the flu with the latest vaccine for the 2018-19 season.
Vaccinations are now available at the Coconino County Public Health Services District Clinic in Flagstaff. Although a yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this shot is more important for some people, including children less than five, particularly those under two years of age or with special healthcare needs. Senior citizens are also more susceptible to the flu, so people 50 years and older should definitely get vaccinated.
The flu vaccine plays an important role in protecting people from the flu virus. Every flu season, medical and scientific experts develop and manufacture a new vaccine designed to combat circulating influenza viruses. Although it’s too early to tell how effective this season’s vaccine is, immunization greatly reduces the likelihood of influenza-related complications like hospitalization, chronic disease or even death. The earlier people get vaccinated, the better, as this gives their immune system more time and energy to prepare for combating any flu viruses.
