Mercedes-Benz Reveals Plans for Driverless Shuttles

One of the auto industry’s top companies has announced plans to test driverless shuttles in California.

Mercedes-Benz has partnered with Bosch, an engineering company and component supplier based out of Germany, to conduct trials for shuttle systems that could create a safe and reliable fleet of driverless shuttle vehicles.

The goal is to make a system that lets customers request a shuttle that will pick up a certain number of passengers autonomously and transport them to a pre-confirmed destination.

Although the companies have not announced the exact location of the trials, they have confirmed the experimental efforts will take place in Silicon Valley, where high-tech comes to life.

The tests are slated to begin in about a year’s time, and will concentrate on creating a viable network of shuttle routes for autonomous vehicles. This will be different than the testing of individual self-driving vehicles, which has been a main focus in the past.

Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, and Bosch previously partnered last year to commence work on robot cars.
