Border Patrol Agents Catch Human Trafficking in the Act

Border Patrol agents work tirelessly to protect our borders. Last week, agents in Nogales made an important arrest, stopping human trafficking in its tracks.

On the evening of Monday, May 14, Border Patrol agents arrested a 22-year-old female driver from Tucson after discovering two males from Mexico inside the trunk of her car. Agents in the primary inspection lane at the Interstate 19 checkpoint near Amado, 40 miles south of Tucson, sent the driver to secondary inspection for her Ford Tarus. Upon further inspection, agents opened the trunk and found two males inside, ages 21 and 24.

The driver, a U.S. citizen, was arrested for human smuggling and the vehicle was seized. The hidden men were processed for violating immigration laws.

After the incident, Border Patrol officials issued a warning that Arizona’s hot summer temperatures can cause serious harm and even death to those riding in the trunk of vehicles. There are also risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and injuries or death from car crashes.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials appreciate assistance from the community and local resources. Citizens can report suspicious or illicit activity to the Border Patrol and remain anonymous by calling 1-877-872-7435 toll free.
