Arkansas Mother Drives Herself to Hospital After Suffering Crossbow Wound

A 40-year-old mother in Arkansas was able to drive herself to the hospital despite being shot in the face with a crossbow.

The arrow was still lodged in the left side of Janet Partain’s face when she arrived at the hospital, severely injured but still conscious and able to speak.

According to local police in Cross County, Arkansas, Partain was allegedly shot in the face by Joseph Avellino, 34, at his property in Wynne, Arkansas. Partain had visited his home to confront him and accuse him of stealing unknown items from her nearby property.

Partain’s 15-year-old nephew and 14-year-old son accompanied her to Avellino’s residence. The police statement alleges the discussion escalated quickly, with Avellino grabbing a crossbow and taking aim at the mother and the two boys. Investigators say he fired one arrow, which pierced Partain’s face after she pushed the boys out of harm’s way.

Partain rushed herself to the hospital, and police arrived at Avellino’s residence and arrested him. He has since been charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor as well as first-degree battery.

Doctors were able to successfully remove the arrow from Partain’s face on Monday, and she was released from the hospital the following day.
