All About Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights, a Jewel in the Desert!

Visit Arizona’s four-story, 5,000 square foot architectural wonder perched atop the highest point of the granite-rich property.

The Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights became open to the public in 2012. Tours are all docent led and only open to the public when being guided on a tour. Tours typically sell out months in advance and there is usually not many cancellations.

The property is found at 5025 East Van Buren Street Phoenix, AZ 85008. The castle is located just West of the 202. Tours are two hours and include viewing the castle’s main floor and basement, cactus gardens, and gift shop.

Over 500 types of cacti were planted within the cactus garden. Many people state that one of the most eye-catching features of the gardens is the white river rock that lines the gardens. Sadly, over the years not all of the cacti survived. However, in 1998 the City of Phoenix started the garden’s restoration.  The city of Phoenix planted 400 Saguaros and 1,000 smaller cacti, over the span of a year. The new plants were planted less densely, which would allow for proper growth and development. In addition, the City installed irrigation systems, split rail fencing, and driveway lighting.
