Walking the Talk: “A” Mountain Restoration

Tempe, AZ / By Lauren Kuby and Bonnie Richardson

On Earth Day, Friday, April 22, ASU’s Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability and the City of Tempe’s Public Works Department hosted the 7th Annual ‘A’ Mountain Restoration Project at Hayden Butte. The ongoing project began when “Protector of the Mountain,” resident Linda Knutson, brought together ASU, Tempe Leadership, and the City to help restore our much-beloved (and overused) desert park.

The volunteer turnout was impressive. Over 150 hardworking participants (including 26 schoolkids) came together to help restore Tempe’s iconic desert preserve.

WHAT DID WE ACCOMPLISH?
• 4 dump trucks (and multiple carts) full of debris and 100 to 150 bags of trash taken off site
• Several tons of scrabble were moved from the landing and re-purpose onto the trail leading up to the top of the Butte
• The entire trail system walked and path borders redefined with rocks
• Weeds removed and trees trimmed at Hayden Flour Mill

WHO WERE THESE 156 VOLUNTEERS?
• Students, faculty, and staff from ASU’s School of Sustainability, the Wrigley Institute, Hillel House, and Engineering Projects in Community Service
• Tempe’s Department of Public Works (Rio Maintenance Team, Parks staff & others)
• James Wennlund, Raymond James & Associates, who fed us
• 26 schoolkids from the Desert Garden Montessori School
• Tempe Mission Palms
• North Tempe, Mitchell Park, and University Park Neighborhoods
• FedEX
• Stryker Sustainability

Save the Date: “A” Mountain Restoration Project returns on Friday, November 18th, just before Thanksgiving!
