TCA Presents Ensemble Mik Nawooj
Live at Tempe Center for the Arts October 20, 2018
Hip-Hop Orchestra goes beyond race and politics with a vision of new America
TEMPE, AZ – Oakland-based, avant-garde Hip-Hop Orchestra ENSEMBLE MIK NAWOOJ (EMN) returns to Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA), for one night only, Saturday, October 20 at 7:30 pm. EMN’s “New Concert Music,” a merging of Hip-Hop and Classical, is a seamless blend of genres, creating an unforgettable live experience.
Tickets are $35 and $45 for adults and $10 for students available at tempecenterforthearts.com, TCA box office, and by phone (480) 350-2822.
Featuring magnetic scores by composer/pianist JooWan Kim, and riveting rhymes by MCs Do D.A.T. and Sandman and backed by a 7-piece chamber orchestra, the group creates New Concert Music by “method sampling,” or borrowing ideas and principles from different disciplines to create something new. The group’s music has gained a following by purists on both sides of the camp, be it Classical or Hip-Hop and is bridging a gap and creating a “new unity.”
Most recently, EMN composed the theme song for this year’s United Nations Global People’s Summit. “Reimagine Humanity” was released September 22, 2018. The group joins an elite crew of Oakland artists who are changing national and global cultural conversations with their work (NPR).
Free live performances by local Tempe band, The Stakes (5:30 – 7:30 pm) and DJ Reflekshin (9:30 pm – 11 pm) before and after the show.
