Raw Cuban Roots, East LA Grit:
Changüí Majadero Brings Cuba’s Rural Music to
Tempe Center for the Arts
October 27, 2018

TEMPE, AZ – LA-based band Changüí Majadero brings its modern take on the Afro-Cuban musical tradition of changüí to Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) – Saturday, October 27 at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are $35 and $45 and available at, TCA box office, and by phone (480) 350-2822. Student, Senior & Military discounts available.

“Captivating and liberating,” (PopMatters) the infectiously danceable LA-based band, Changüí Majadero, has distinguished itself by infusing contemporary sound into the Cuban tradition of changüí, the 19th century foundation of contemporary salsa informed by African influences.

Founded by tres guitarist and vocalist Gabriel García, the band was the result of García’s pivotal journey to the Guantanamo region of Cuba, where he learned the changüí from the living masters of the style and was inspired to spread the spirit of Cuban folkloric music mixed with a dash of East Los Angeles grit.

Changüí Majadero has gained notoriety nationwide, playing the Lincoln Center, SF Jazz, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and even Dodger Stadium.

The band released their self-titled debut recording in 2016 that encompasses compositions bristling with propulsive rhythms and evocative vocals — a celebrated release that All About Jazz called “joyous music, deserving greater recognition.”

“Changüí Majadero is an adventurous ensemble which is reintroducing Cuban Changüí to a new generation … and taking it from Cuba to California while adding their own blend of syncopated flavors.” – All About Jazz
