U of A Student in Critical Condition After Crash

A University of Arizona student remains in critical condition after a car crash with a suspected drunk driver.

Ashley Murray is listed in critical condition at an intensive care unit in her native California, where she had been visiting home for the holidays. The incident occured in Redondo Beach during the early morning hours of Friday, Dec. 22. Murray and a friend were heading home when the Uber vehicle they were riding in was hit by another vehicle that blew through a red light. This driver, later identified as 24-year-old Jossy Patrick Avalos,  is suspected of drunk driving. He was taken into police custody an hour after the crash, and he pled not guilty to several charges including DUI causing great bodily harm during his arraignment on Wednesday, Dec. 27.

The uber driver was not injured in the crash, while the other passenger was listed in stable condition and could come home from the hospital soon.

Murray is still unconscious after suffering head injuries and undergoing several surgeries in an effort to minimize brain damage. Her friends have set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for unexpected hospital expenses. They’ve currently raised over $34,000 to help her family in this difficult time.

Murray was studying at U of A and she’s set to graduate in June 2018. She had plans to pursue nursing school in hopes of becoming a NICU nurse.

According to her GoFundMe page, Ashley is “a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority and is loved by so many. She is a bright and positive person, beautiful inside and out. Her infectious laugh, smile and goofy personality charmed everyone she encountered.  She is a very loved daughter, sister, cousin, niece, and friend to all of us.”
