Tucson Museum of Art Plans Opening Weekend Celebration

Mark your calendars for a day of fun next month! Come on down and celebrate at a free community celebration at the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block!

Following a summer of renovations and expansion, the Tucson Museum of Art is celebrating it’s reopening with it’s community supporters who made it possible! Admission will be FREE on reopening weekend: Saturday, October 21 and Sunday, October 22! Visitors will get the first look at new galleries, new feature exhibitions, and new selections from the museum’s permanent collection. Now, there will be over twenty galleries of world-class art, including the new exhibitions Desert Dweller and Dress Matters: Clothing as Metaphor. The public is encouraged to come and down and experience all that the museum has to offer.

The festivities will kick off on Saturday, with an 11 a.m. performance by Stories that Soar, a literacy program that encourages children to write about anything they want, transforming words and ideas into works of art. Then there will be a Curator walk at 1 p.m. with Dr. Julie Sasse, Chief Curator and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. The celebration will continue throughout the evening at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, courtesy of Film Fest Tucson, which will present a screening of “House of Z,” a documentary surrounding the life and work of designer Zac Posen.

On Sunday, there will be an 11 a.m. dance performance choreographed by Shelly Hawkins, followed by a 1 p.m. curator walk with Christine Brindza, Glasser Curator of Art of the American West. There will also be a 3 p.m. performance by Solidarite Sympa.

This is all made possible by sponsors of the 2017-2018 Exhibition season including Connie Hillman Family Foundation, James J. and Louise R. Glasser, Anne Y. Snodgrass, BMO Private Bank, and AC Hotel Tucson.
