Fresh, locally–grown produce boxes are a unique gift that help support the Valley’s homeless and food insecure. This holiday season, Valley nonprofit group Project Roots AZ, is selling produce boxes and produce box subscriptions for gift giving convenience and a greater purpose. Profits from the produce boxes are reinvested into the community through two community gardens located in South Phoenix and Mesa, which help provide food for the less fortunate.
“With the support of the community this holiday season, we can continue to grow natural foods to give to those in need across the Valley,” said Bridget Pettis, Project Roots AZ co-founder and former Phoenix Mercury player and Chicago Sky coach. “It is our mission to help those in need as well as provide an opportunity for families to understand the value and process of growing their own food.”
Pettis started the Project Roots AZ charity organization with the goal of offering access to nutritious food and promoting a healthier, more sustainable way of living for urban neighborhoods. She draws from her Midwest gardening knowledge to educate and feed Arizona’s underserved population through local community gardens and mobile kitchen service.
“Often the most vulnerable population is left to eat sub-par food or worse yet, go hungry,” said Pettis. “This staggering situation was why at Project Roots AZ we are driven to educate the community about self-reliance and the empowerment that comes from growing their own food. We also support those in need by feeding them from our local community gardens and mobile kitchen service. With Project Roots AZ, we want to make a real difference and provide opportunities for everyone to get the fresh foods necessary to live a healthier life.”
This year, Project Roots AZ is offering seasonal produce boxes as an affordable gift option that makes an impact for the less fortunate in Phoenix. Freshly picked from the garden to customers’ door for just $35.00 a box, the seasonal offerings vary each week depending on supply and demand. Produce boxes are delivered every Sunday. Monthly and bi-weekly produce box subscriptions can also be purchased from $55 – $100 per month. Visit https://www.projectrootsaz.org/produceboxes to order a box for yourself or as a gift today.
For nearly two years, Project Roots AZ volunteers have grown fresh fruits and vegetables in its two community garden locations. Produce harvested by volunteers is then donated to local food banks and sold at farmer’s markets and through seasonal produce bag delivery services. Proceeds made from the sale of these products are then reinvested in Project Roots AZ to help more recipients.
