Congratulations to Tempe Prep Senior Aimee Cheng who was one of only five students in the Valley selected for the prestigious, nationally recognized Bank of America Student Leaders Program.

Aimee participated in this program this past summer and said it was a truly eye-opening experience.

Each year about 200 students nationally are selected to participate in this program. They all received a eight-week full-time paid internship with local non-profits. Aimee was placed in an internship at the Grant Woods Boys and Girls Club of the East Valley. At first, she was hesitant about working with young children, but she came out of the program loving her job, and she continues to work there.

The program also includes an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C. for a week during the summer to meet with Arizona’s senators and discuss political issues, visit monuments, hear a variety of impactful speakers, and watch a pre-screening of a new environmental documentary. She also got to meet other students from all across the country participating in the program. During the trip, she made some great new friends with other like-minded student leaders from across America.

This program is available for juniors and seniors, and the application is due in the late winter. Aimee highly recommends the program because, “It really opened my eyes to significant problems in our inner cities and the impact that a single person can make in our communities. I also learned about the importance of teaching financial literacy to young people. The internship I received was also tons of fun, and I was able to start saving for college!”

The program also inspired Aimee to start an Investment Club at Tempe Prep, which meets weekly to promote financial literacy among high school students.
