Tempe Elementary Sends Help to Hurricane Harvey Victims

Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Friday, August 25 and left a major impact on Southeastern Texas. With more than 40 inches of rainfall in many areas as well as wind speeds of more than 120 miles per hour, Harvey left more than 30,000 people displaced.

Sonja Long and her third-grade classroom at Aguilar Elementary have been in contact with the Red Cross and decided to lend a helping hand to those affected by the natural disaster by sending out care packages to families.

Long’s class is looking to pool together gently used toys to send to those who were suddenly removed from their homes, and each student is writing a letter and drawing a picture. They’re specifically seeking out families with children to let them know they have friends their age supporting them.

“It’s like we’re sharing with our friends,” said Third-Grader Anthony Arjona as he finished up his drawing. “We may not know them, but they still need toys to play with.”

Although the original plan was to just include toys, the class briefly gathered together and discussed other possible items that they feel would benefit those in need. Students took charge and brought up ideas themselves from clothes they don’t need anymore to blankets that could come in handy to those fleeing from their homes.

“What would cheer you up?” asked Long, addressing her class about what they could send over. “What would make you smile?”

The students were proactive in finding different ways to help and thinking about the impact they could potentially leave on those down on their luck.

“The kids in Texas are supposed to be in school right now, but aren’t because of the flooding,” said Steven Rodriguez, a student in Long’s class. “We’re doing this for them to let them know we’re here and wanting to help.”

Thank you to Ms. Long and her class for their efforts to help those in need!
