Successful Week for Navajo Gaming at the Navajo Nation 73rd Annual Fair

Continued support to Navajo Nation at 4H Livestock Show featuring 16 events, including Rodeo and Navajo Beef Sliders Eating Contest

Navajo Gaming continued its support of the Navajo Nation at the 73rd Annual Navajo Nation Fair. Starting with a formal check presentation to fair organizers of $120,000. – which supported 16 events throughout the weeklong fair festivities – Navajo Gaming took an additional step to support young 4H members at the Livestock Show.  Navajo Gaming purchased livestock and will donate all proceeds of processed livestock to Senior Center of the Navajo Nation.

There was a healthy, very spirited bidding process that took place between Navajo Gaming and President of the Navajo Nation, Jonathan Nez that resulted in even higher profits for the young 4H tribal members selling their livestock. Navajo Gaming ended up purchasing one-third of the livestock at the event.

“We currently serve Navajo beef steaks at our eating establishments and want to continue to support our future livestock growers through 4H membership,” Brian Parrish, Navajo Gaming Interim CEO, stated. “President Jonathan Nez told the audience at the livestock show that a great way to show sovereignty was by growing our own livestock and selling to our own Dine’ people.”

On the second day of festivities, Navajo Gaming hosted the first-ever Navajo Beef Sliders Eating Contest. Four finalists from three Navajo Gaming properties participated in the four-round competition. The large crowd cheered for the property competitors during the finale, three winners emerged. The third place winner Francisco Gil ate 15 sliders in 10 minutes, winning $1,000; the second place winner Johnathan Bennett finished 17 sliders in 10 minutes, winning $2,000; and in first place winner Zackary Poyer of Teec Nos Pos, downed 17 Navajo Beef Sliders in five minutes, 54 seconds, taking home $5,000 in cash.

“We hope this will be an annual event, highlighting our work with our Dine’ people to help promote the Navajo Beef industry,” said Navajo Gaming Board of Directors Chair, Quincy Natay.

Navajo Gaming also supported the Wild Horse Race, an event where groups of four contestants try to saddle a Wild Mustang and ride it across the finish line at the nightly rodeo event. The grand prize winners, The Chizzie Riders, walked away Sunday with $15,000 in cash, beautiful leather tooled horse bits, buckles and a cooler.

Finally, at the Rodeo Grand Finale the All-Around Cowboy Donovan Yazzie and the All-Around Cowgirl Serena Dahozy were each presented with a wonderful Three-Slant Horse Trailer that they’ll be able to use throughout the year at additional fairs and competitions.

“Our participation with the Navajo Nation Fair has always been one of great honor and appreciation to our Dine’ people, supporting our growth through embracing our culture, and celebrating life through harmony and Ke’,” Natay added.

“We are very thankful to the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise, Navajo Nation Department of Agriculture, Navajo Nation Fair Office, and all of the hard-working employees for their contributions and dedication to make this year’s fair an enjoyable experience for all of our Navajo people and visitors,” said President Nez. “This is also a time for us to come together and support our local Navajo businesses, vendors, and entrepreneurs and we thank Navajo Gaming for supporting the Buy Navajo, Buy Local initiative.”
