Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering student shares insight on maximizing summer work-based experience

 

Tempe, Arizona (August 4, 2022) — Walkersville, Maryland native and Arizona State University student Mason Long is spending this summer interning at Rosendin, the electrical contracting industry’s largest employee-owned firm. Long and 90 other interns nationwide are receiving real-world experience in project management, estimating, safety, Building Information Modeling, IT, finance, and marketing, while paving the way for further career development.

 

Long is a senior studying Civil Engineering at Arizona State University, Tempe. As an intern at Rosendin’s Tempe, Arizona office Long is developing new skills and learning the ins and outs of the construction industry. Working with the team, Long is primarily tasked with analyzing blueprints and shadowing project management to get a better understanding of what it takes to run a project.

 

“I’ve always been drawn towards the construction industry, and Rosendin seemed like a great company. So far it has been an amazing experience,” says Long. “My biggest takeaway from the weeklong training has been that you get out what you put into it. Rosendin has tons of room for growth, but you have to be willing to put in the work to move up in the ranks.”

 

Long is learning new skills and strategies to help navigate a career in construction that are relevant to the job and internship search in any profession. Consider these tips when seeking out new career opportunities and trying to make the most out of a summer work-based experience:

1.       Aligning Values – Seek out companies that have clear and purposeful mission statements and core values. For example, Rosendin’s commitment to safety through meaningful action and permanent solutions is rooted in its core values: “We Care. We Share. We Listen. We Innovate. We Excel.

2.       Develop Goals – Meet with managers early on to establish goals and create a plan to achieve those goals. Frequent check-ins to review progress are an integral part of a successful internship experience.

3.       Find Mentors – Every intern at Rosendin is assigned a mentor at the beginning of their internship and can turn to them for advice and guidance as they solve real-world problems together. This is proven to increase self-confidence and awareness and builds communication skills.

4.       Do Your Research – Research the companies you are applying to and make informed decisions so that you know you will end up in a position where you can learn as much as possible. It’s important to intern for a company that’s a good fit for you and treats you well!

 

Rosendin’s Summer Intern Program aims to help students realize their full potential and develop them into future leaders. Upon successful program completion, interns are invited back the following summer or offered a full-time position.
