An overnight fire ripped through a home in Scottsdale last week, tragically killing 16 dogs.
According to the Scottsdale Fire Department, reports of the blaze came in around 10 p.m., and first responders rushed to the home near Loop 101 and Thomas. Emergency crews from Tempe, Phoenix and Scottsdale were on the scene within minutes, and they were greeted with heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the residence. With word that there were dogs still inside, crews rushed to put out the fire and they were luckily able to save eight dogs. Sadly, 16 other canines died in the blaze. One rescued dog was treated on the scene and later taken to a veterinarian for a medical evaluation.
Officials say the homeowners were an unofficial rescue shelter for dogs in need. There is no current state law that regulates pet rescues, who can open one and how many pets they can keep.
The investigation continues into the blaze, which officials believe began in the kitchen as that was the most damaged part of the home.
