Renovated Terminal 3 to Get New Name
Terminal 3 at Sky Harbor International Airport has been undergoing massive upgrades, and it will soon receive a new name.
On Wednesday, Phoenix City Council voted in favor of naming the newly renovated terminal after Senator John McCain.
The popular politician, recognized for his dedication to public service even after his brain cancer diagnosis earlier this year, has served as senior U.S. Senator for Arizona since 1987.
Earlier this month, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton praised McCain in a public announcement. “Senator McCain has given so much of himself to our country, to Arizona and to Phoenix. Giving something back to an American hero, a former naval aviator, and a 30-year member of the U.S. Senate is the least we can do.” Stanton said.
The $590 million renovation project will include a remodeled concourse, energy efficient lighting, and new shops and restaurants. Terminal 3 will be home to Delta Airlines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Great Lakes Airlines, Boutique Air and Alaska Airlines– many of which moved from Terminal 2, a dated facility that is set for demolition.
“Sky Harbor Airport is one of America’s busiest airports and is a point of pride for Phoenicians. As such, there is no greater honor the city can bestow than to name one of its terminals after a community leader,” said Councilman Jim Waring.
The resolution passed unanimously.
